About the Author
John N. Gardner brings unparalleled experience to students as an author. The recipient of his institution's highest award for teaching excellence, John has over forty years of experience directing and teaching in the most widely emulated first-year seminar in the country, the University 101 course at the University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia. John is universally recognized as one of the country's leading educators for his role in initiating and orchestrating an international reform movement to improve the beginning college experience, a concept he coined as "the first-year experience." He is the founding executive director of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at USC, as well as the Policy Center on the First Year of College and the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (www.jngi.org), both based in Brevard, N.C.�Betsy O. Barefoot is a writer, researcher, and teacher whose special area of scholarship is the first-year seminar. During her tenure at USC from 1988 to 1999, she served as codirector for research and publications at the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She also taught University 101 and graduate courses on the first-year experience and the principles of college teaching. She conducts first-year seminar faculty training workshops around the world and is frequently called on to evaluate first-year seminar outcomes. Betsy is codirector and senior scholar in the Policy Center on the First Year of College and Vice President of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education both in Brevard, N.C. In her Policy Center role she led a major national research project to identify institutions of excellence in the first college year. She currently works with both two- and four-year campuses in evaluating all components of the first year.

Typical Wodehouse hilarity, a delightfully tangled plot, and the simplest and most moving marriage proposal scene I've ever read. I like the Wooster and Jeeves books well enough, but I love this one.

Character Will Out!

P.G. Wodehouse is famous for his characters and his marvelous mix-ups in English country houses that will remind many readers of the better Shakespearean comedies in which lovers run amok in the Forest of Arden. Writers have always admired his original turns of phrase.

In his later years, Mr. Wodehouse often recycled his characters and the stories became impenetrable in some cases to those who had not read the earlier books. But every so often, he took the time to develop new characters and put them into the usual country house run around. That's exactly what occurred in The Girl in Blue, with very fine results.

Homer Pyle, an eminent corporation lawyer, is abashed to have to rescue his sister, the wealthy Barney Claybourne, from being prosecuted for shoplifting from Guildenstern's on Madison Avenue in New York. It seems like there's a history in the family, and Homer doesn't know what to do. When Guildenstern's insists Barney be taken out of town, that solution proves to be a relief. Guildenstern's suggests that Barney be kept away from department stores so they agree to take Barney to a country home that takes paying guests in England, one Mellingham Hall, operated by the impoverished Crispin Scrope.

Meanwhile in London, Jerry West, Crispin's nephew, finds himself falling in love with a fellow juror. That's a problem because Jerry's already engaged to one of the town's great beauties . . . who happens to be a gold digger.

Crispin's brother, Willoughby, becomes the London host for Homer and Barney and shares with them his pride and joy, a Gainsborough miniature that he has just purchased. Homer panics and the fun begins!

The story proceeds at a comfortable pace to pose all kinds of awkward situations and dilemmas that lead the characters even more into the soup. It's a delightful plot and the characters are even more wonderful. Enjoy!

Good old-fashioned farce

THE GIRL IN BLUE has all the elements of classic farce, complete with slamming doors and mixed-up identities, but it never feels preposterous. In many farces, the whole thing would unravel if only one person explained himself or his actions...yet people explain themselves constantly in this book and they still get in terrible scrapes. Very late in Wodehouse's career, but in no way a minor work.

Kindergarten-Grade 4-Jenkins, this time in collaboration with his wife, has created yet another eye-opening book. Children will learn that lizards can completely break off their tail as a defense and that it will grow back. And, they'll find out that crickets' ears are on their knees. Most fish have two eyes, but some have four, the better to see above and below the water at the same time. These are just a few of the fascinating facts of nature dangled out front to draw readers into this beautifully illustrated book. On each spread, five different animals' tails, ears, eyes, or other body parts, done in vibrant cut-paper collage, appear with a simple question ("What do you do with a- like this?"). The next spread shows the five creatures in their entirety and offers a brief explanation. For example, "If you're an elephant, you use your nose to give yourself a bath." The back pages offer more information for older or more curious readers. This is a great book for sharing one-on-one or with a group.

*Starred Review* PreS-Gr. 2. Here's another exceptional cut-paper science book from Jenkins, this time put together with a partner, and like previous books, it's a stunner. An opening page, clearly explaining how to use the book, is followed by a double-page spread picturing the mouths of several different animals, accompanied by the question, "What do you do with a mouth like this?" The next spread shows each animal in full, explaining in a few simple words how the part functions. Tail, ears, nose, and eyes are covered in the same manner. A picture glossary at the back shows each animal again, postage-stamp size, with an informative note elaborating on the creature's special adaptation. The notes also neatly answer questions that might arise during a reading (Why do horned lizards squirt blood out their eyes?) and add to the interactive aspect of the book. A variety of animals is represented--some (elephant, hippo, chimp) will be comfortably familiar; others (four-eyed fish, blue-footed booby) are of interest because of their strangeness. Jenkins' handsome paper-cut collages are both lovely and anatomically informative, and their white background helps emphasize the particular feature, be it the bush baby's lustrous, liquid-brown eyes or the skunk's fuzzy tail. This is a striking, thoughtfully created book with intriguing facts made more memorable through dynamic art. Tim Arnold

What Do You Review With A Book Like This

This book is breathtaking, a real stand-out visually -- and at the same time grippingly educational and fun for kids. If you want to see that dawning light of curiousity and hunger for understanding in a child that's just learning that it's fun to learn, there's no better book than this one.

The animals are rendered with great richness and depth by (if you look closely) beautiful torn-paper collages. It's so skillfully done by Steve Jenkins that all of the creatures are full of personality, and seem to live in a batik-cartoon world.

The riveting part is how there are so many animals that each have unusual stories revealed through fun and different and interesting body parts. This is not a "first animals" book at all. Rather it gains its fascination by showing how animals make so many different uses of their body parts, uses that go against what you first think.

For instance: A platypus uses its nose "to dig in the mud." But "[i]f you're an elephant, you use your nose to give yourself a bath" [image of trunk squirting water back over elephant's head]. For ears, you learn that a jackrabbit uses its ears to keep cool, and crickets have ears on their knees. A chimpanzee can eat with its feet, and a gecko's feet are sticky so it can walk on the ceiling. And so on.

Engrossing and whimsical from page to page again and again. Just wonderful!

At the end of the book, a section includes a one-paragraph "bio" with additional details about each animal, with the rest of the story on the unique appendage. For example, the chimpanzee has some general description, and also this detail about how they eat with their feet: "Like people, they have an opposable thumb. Unlike us, thy also have an opposable big toe. This allows them to pick up and manipulate things with their feet." This description is obviously way more advanced than the book itself -- but children love to hear more of the story about characters or animals from the adult reading to them, and this book gives you (the adult) the back story for every one of them.

I was floored when What Do You Do with a Tail Like This arrived. Giggly and awed at the same time. The reviews didn't prepare me for how much I'd viscerally like this book the moment I opened it! I cannot recommend this highly enough!

This very creative book imbeds interesting information about animals and then has more traditional presentation of information in the last pages. My experience has been that children ages 5-11 find it to be very engaging.

I was excessed from the school I worked in and now I travel to a different school every week to cover assorted classes like a substitute teacher. Sometimes I use this book for K-4 classes and they just get so excited when they make the correct guess. It's a hit every time!

All growth is hard work

All growth is really hard work. This is hard work. I would equate it to the transformation that The Incredible Hulk goes through. The thing is though, it isn't that fast. It takes time and dedication. I've read maybe 30 books and they all have their wisdoms and their truths, but it was this book that put me on the road I needed to be on. Somethings just resonate. This resonated with me, and when I started communicating with the abandoned and hurt child within me, I could for the first time see what had gone wrong and what I needed to do to fix it. I'm not completely there, but I have no doubt that I will.

Made the biggest difference in my life in REAL LIFE PRACTICAL WAYS than any other 'self help' book I've ever read.

This book was given to me by a mentor many years ago, when I was going through a breakup and relationship "drama" stuff. Mind spiraling, constantly strategizing in the outside world for how I could get my needs met, never succeeding, because underneath all my strategies was insecurity, confusion as to what those needs even were, etc. I was clinging, emotionally grasping, unknowingly turning off the very people from whom I was seeking comfort and stability.

I was in so much pain that I was willing to sit down and put the time in and do what is suggested in the book.

And my whole world changed. It's too long of a process to describe here, but I learned how to FEEL what was going on, and therefore move the pain through and out of my body, all the while in the very process of doing that sending myself and my past pain the love that it was so seeking from outside myself.

Don't get me wrong, I've long since gotten over the whole "loving ourselves is enough" mentality of the bohemian and feminist movement that I was very much a part of. We are human, we were meant for closeness and intimacy. So I don't think the goal is to just learn how to "go it" alone how I always thought we should be able to before. But this book helped me love myself so utterly and deeply that I knew how to take care of myself through my hurts so that I could then communicate authentically, not manipulatively. I was able to state what I needed and how I needed to care for myself. No more grasping. No more desperation. Unless, of course, you're talking about the desperation I felt to continue to connect on a daily basis with what I discovered to be the most beautiful, soft, radiant, warm, loving part of myself. Doing these practices became my favorite part of every day. I became addicted to loving and discovering myself!!! :-) That then started drawing people TOWARDS me, because for the first time I was connected to it myself.

Some people have said some of the exercises are hokey, and the term "inner child" turns some people off. Please, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. Our inner child is just the FEELING, emotional and receptive part of ourselves. Not our intellectual, thinking, heady part that always uses strategizing in the outer world as a solution, often completely missing the mark in its best attempt to meet our needs, because we've never even learned how to tune into what we're REALLY wanting and needing. This book teaches you how to do it.

My only complaint is the book title. It just doesn't really suffice for what the book is about. To me, it makes it sound like it's only for people who don't have community and friends and feel alone. No, it's about connecting with the part of you that is so wholly beautiful, tender, and loving inside, and radiating that outward naturally so that you are in a state of constant feeling of Oneness and connection. I know...two more words that will turn off the anti-New Age crowd. Oh well... :-)

About the Author

Mohammad Hassan Khalil is Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Adjunct Professor of Law, and Director of the Muslim Studies Program at Michigan State University. Before returning to his hometown of East Lansing, Michigan, he was Assistant Professor of Religion and Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). He has published several journal articles and book chapters in the field of Islamic thought.

A Humbling Read!

Speechless! Brought me to tears! A humbling read and really shows how people need to critically think, rather than sweep everything with the broadest of generalizations; thinking the One who controls everything is constrained or controlled by our philosophies, thoughts, and world politics is absurd if not ludicrous. We are a speck on a speck revolving around another speck of nothingness in this universe: that's just the reality of things.
Islam and the Fate of Others provides a balanced analysis of a bunch of scholarly discourse in Islamic soteriology. Thankfully it is just a presentation (non biased: if such a thing is possible) of most influential soteriological positions that the various Islamic scholars/personalities have held throughout history and into the modern times.
Although a bit on the expensive side of things, this book is totally worth the money you spend. :')
