About the Author
Alberto Leon-Garcia is a Professor in the Depatment of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toranto where he holds the Jeffrey Skoll Chair in Computer Network and Innovation. He was also Chief Technical Officer and Co-Founder of Accelight Networks Inc. where he led the development of a terabit multiservice optical switch. In 1999 Dr. Leon-Garcia became an IEEE fellow for "for Contribution to multiplexing and switching of Integrated Service traffic."

Inra Widjaja received his Ph.D degree in electrical engineering on high-speed packet switching architectures from the uiversity of Toronto in 1992. Since 2001 he has been a researcher at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies. Dr.Widjaja's current research interests include traffic Engineering, architectures for cost effective tranport networks, and High-Speed packet Switching. He has Extensive publication in technical journals and high-Speed packet Switching. He has an Extensive Publication in technical Journals and Conferences and holds several patents in Switching architectures. He is also an active member of IETF and IEEE.

Good coverage, but difficult to use for out-of-order reading or as a reference

I am using this textbook for a Masters-level course in network communications.

This book covers each topic quite well, but I found it difficult to use for out-of-order reading. Particularly when using algebraic notation, the meanings of the variables are not defined in each and every example, meaning that you have to manually go back through the book to find out where in the book the values were first defined. For this reason, where mathematical formulas are involved (which is quite often), it's difficult to locate a topic and read up just on that topic without a lot of frustration. It would be much easier to use if the variable definitions were repeated in each example.

So, perhaps it is good for a cover-to-cover read for someone who is able to take in and understand information thoroughly on the first pass, but it's not good as a reference book or for people who follow a different method of learning.

Mandatory Reading for Anyone studying Network Communications

Over 10 years ago, Dr. Leon-Garcia wrote the epitimal tome on computer networks, and it is still mandatory reading at the graduate level. The material within is starting to show its age. Most of it's very historical, what the modern comm systems are based on. If he ever writes a next edition, I hope he adds something about modern wifi.

for undergraduate class

This was for my communications networks class. We went through a majority of the book (ch 1-8). I feel like it's already getting outdated (c)2004. But it gives a good introductory explanation of a huge variety of topics. I like the topic so reading the book was actually enjoyable unlike other engineering textbooks. It's not that long winded.
The homework problems included are pretty hard and sometimes the wording was confusing. A couple times we had to look up things on the internet. And the solution manuals were sort of ambiguous on the method to solve the problems. The appendix has some good formulas.
There's also a pdf ebook out there too. That makes things convenient.

Outstanding, But Don't Confuse It With The Usual Golden Triangle Boredom

Amazon reviewers rightfully mention the computational background of this book. Unfortunately, the publishers are giving "canned" general science readership hype and background reviews (possibly to increase the readership base) on the usual pi, golden triangle, zero, i, e, etc. topics that make for pop sci math. This book is FAR BETTER (and a LOT different) than those! Publishers take note: you will sell MORE of this fine text by simply being honest and pointing out how different it really is by bringing in unique computational topics and examples.

Sure, Mark covers a bit of background on historic (and even pop sci) math, and does the usual genuflection to pi, zero, e, i, etc. but then rapidly moves into computational math topics never covered in the pop sci books like group theory, transfinites, the halting problem, and many more, using computer math as both examples and primary chapters in some cases. Even where he covers the i/e/pi topics, he does so with very unique examples, including computation (I'm calling numerical analysis and graph theory computer math so I don't scare away potential readers, because the author DOES NOT write or assume math above high school level. On the other hand, if you are in math, you'll still love many of the building blocks here. I write DSLs for robotics and even with a Masters in applied math thoroughly enjoyed this book).

Highly recommended, ironically FOR anyone with a general interest in very up to date math topics, due to the examples from IT. Knowing about the computer frame of reference can really enhance your enjoyment even as a general math fan, because Chu-Carroll uses examples, humor and very clear explanations even though many of the topics are new, relevant, up to date and unique.

Good but full of typos & errors

This is a good book, especially for its right selection of topics that are of great interest for computer scientists -and mathematicians obviously. The only reason I am giving it three stars is because the book contents is *plagued* with typos, errors and formatting inconsistencies. I wish I had written down them as I was reading it.

Fantastic book covering a lot of ground

If you're a programmer who has had little exposure to some of the so-called, 'higher' realms of math, this book is written for you. My only real complaint (the reason it does not get five stars), is that it doesn't dive deeply into most of the topics covered, so you're left with just a taste of each. Of course, that's to be expected in a book such as this. If it were thorough, in any sense, it would be at least twice if not ten times as long (or much, much more). Regardless, if you are a software developer, unless you already have a degree in math, you should pick this book up and give it a read. Lots of non-programmers should, as well, of course!

A prophet of the most unlikely kind

With this simple phrase on p.15 of my edition of The Peter Principle he explained nearly every problem the human species has faced as we have entered increasingly complex organizations in the development of our civilization,

In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence given enough time and enough levels in the hierarchy

And the more I've thought about it, internalized it, experienced corporate hierarchy... the more I've realized that it explains everything.

A housing bubble caused by artificially low inflation rates? Some blame Greenspan but the reality is that he was just serving above his level of competence. It makes sense. America's colony in Iraq flubbed? Some blame Bush or his subordinates but the reality was that they were serving above their level of competence. We all do from time to time. We all think we are the exception.

As acquaintances enter the work force and through my own witness to the mindset of the low level employee, everyone seems to be focused primarily on ascending to the higher levels. Why? I think it is what we do as a species. It is our fate. I don't mean to dissuade blame from individuals, removing responsibility from personal action. I only intened to explain that we shouldn't expect success, we should expect blindingly stupid failure and then be pleasantly surprised when things aren't flubbed up. That's not being cynical or "realist". It is just recognizing human nature. Incompetence knows no boundaries of time or place.

The Peter Principle when published in 1969 raised a storm because many did not want to accept that they existed at their level of incompetence. Business people didn't take it seriously because it was written tounge-in-cheek with full blown laugh out loud moments. Far different from the bland, dry language they were used to while obtaining their MBAs. I thoroughly enjoyed the book because it is an opportune time for me to examine if I have already achieved my level of incompetence.

While the explanations of the Principle could easily be redundant... (the plot is summarized at the beginning as Dr. Peter states the principle) this book isn't redundant, like a Dilbert cartoon with some acute wisdom. Dr. Peter describes, through various case studies and examples, that every perceived exception to the Principle isn't really an exception at all. Complex hierarchies will see its members achieve the ominous final placement. Someday I too can reach this level.I can get stressed out while making poor decisions. I too can wear the badge of administrative "success": the ulcer.

This might all seem a bit pessimistic. A little defeatist. But not at all. The solution is to focus our species on moving forward instead of upwards. We see our cohorts in groups struggling for status on a, "treadmill to oblivion." But Dr. Peter clearly states that we can rescue ourselves by seeing where this unmindful escalation is leading us. If we focus on the quality of our situation we can achieve previously ignored success without obtaining a literal or figurative promotion.

By applying this principle to our everyday experience, we witness many byproducts. For example, the applied Peter Principle approximates that employees in a hierarchy, "do not truly object to incompetence, they merely gossip about incompetence to mask their envy of employees who have pull." ... with pull being the ability to develop a relationship with someone above you in the hierarchy who can pull you up with them. How poignant. We decry good `ol boy networks but rarely focus on the one thing that could break them up, changing our focus from output to input. I can put in a 40-50 hour work week but would I be more productive if I worked 30-35 hours? We may never know because a full-time job insists that I work 40-50 crushing and life imbalancing hours. Society has focused on input in this situation. Can we think of a better solution to this situation? I'll apply Peter's Bridge to this question: if you can't think of a better solution you have already reached your level of incompetence.

Although the observations made in the Peter Principle are obviously applicable to corporate environments, Laurence Peter made some other candid observations of society in these pages. Such as, exposing our modern caste system on p.64 and p.83 of the 2009 edition:

...we have a class system, it is based not on birth but on the prestige of the university one has attended. The graduate of an obscure college does not have the same opportunity for promotion... but as college degrees become the prerequisite for more jobs, soon everyone will have access to his or her level of incompetence.

...with incompetent handling, the test system is only a disguised form of random placement. The purpose of testing is to place the employee as soon as possible in a job which will utilize the highest competence level on his profile. Obviously, any promotion will be to an area of less competence.

Brilliant stuff that has played out over the last 30+ years just as Dr. Peter predicted.

Good and Classic Explanation of some of the "Whys" of Life

This is a good, classic read on the inevitable rise to incompetency. The author does give you some suggestions to delay or avoid such a promotion. I half enjoyed the names he made up a long the way as tongue and cheek descriptions however; as a fast reader (normally) I found this also slowed me down a bit as well. It's not a big book; if I wanted to, I could have read it in one sitting, but there is so much to absorb and so I found it best to trip over the names, think about the message, chew on it a while and then, absorb it. I do recommend this book as an explanation of why things, especially in dysfunctional companies, are the way they are. I surely could think of examples in each and every stumbling word and name he described.

Introduction

The Babylon Prophecy

Babylon, both as a legendary ancient city and the first unrivaled world empire, has loomed large inmemory throughout human history. Six hundred years before Jesus came to earth, the Euphrates River Valley was home to the magnificent Babylonian Empire. The Babylonians had conquered the rest of the known world and brought untold numbers of people from the defeated kingdoms to Babylon as slaves.

Among the slaves was a youngman who was chosen byGod to become one of the greatest of the Hebrew prophets. God gave Daniel visions of the future and the ability to interpret dreams. While living in exile, Daniel recorded prophecies that some twenty-six centuries later give us a highly detailed look at our own future. Daniel saw the unfolding of human history and the days of Jesus Christ on earth. And as we will read in the chapters that follow, he saw the most detailed visions describing the end of the age–the days that we are about to enter.

We live in prophetic times, so it is not surprising that the land of Babylon– present-day Iraq and parts of present-day Iran–is the focus of international tension and the subject of daily news reports. Iraq is torn by violent insurgencies, armed factions fighting for control of the country, and sectarian violence that continually causes injury and death. Foreign fighters, devoted to the cause of Al Qaeda and radical Islam, enter Iraq to join militant groups, to help train terrorists, to battle against Western allied forces, and to plot the demise of the State of Israel.

THE POWER OF ANCIENT BABYLON

The name Babylon still evokes a powerful image of the greatest city of the ancient world. The name is derived from babel, a Hebrew word meaning “the gate of God.” Located fifty-six miles south of modern-day Baghdad in Iraq, it rapidly grew in power until it became the most important city inthe ancient world. Babylon is in an area originally known by the name Sumer, or Shinar, designating the fertile country lying between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The land also was known as Mesopotamia, meaning “the land between the rivers.”

The first mention of Babylon in the Bible reveals that the city of Babel was founded by Nimrod, who was the son of Cush. “Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD.… And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel” (Genesis 10:8—10). This was the site of the first widespread rebellion against God. The men of Babel built an enormous tower in an arrogant attempt to rebel against God and make themselves famous. “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 11:4). God’s response was to “confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech” (Genesis 11:7). In the confusion that resulted, “the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city” (Genesis 11:8). Scientists have verified the dispersion of humanity throughout three continents after the Flood (see Genesis 10:32; 11:8—9).

History records that much later, around 1760 BC, King Hammurabi made Babylon the political and religious capital of his very powerful but small empire.Hammurabi combined astute diplomacy with superbmilitary leadership to defeat the surrounding kingdoms inMesopotamia.He was the first major king who created a written code of laws, known as the Code of Hammurabi. He became the ruler of the first united Babylonian Empire, which extended fromthe Persian Gulf to theHabur Rivermore than amillennium before the rise of the Babylonian Empire of Nebuchadnezzar.

In the seventh century BC, under King Nabopolassar and later his famous son, Nebuchadnezzar, the new empire of Babylon waged continuous wars against neighboring kingdoms, laying waste to cities and carrying countless numbers of people into captivity. Most notable among the millions of captives were the Judeans of Israel, who were taken in three phases between 606 BC and 587 BC.

Some historical sources conclude that Nebuchadnezzar conquered Judah in 605 BC. However, a careful reading of the Scriptures reveals that the correct date is actually 606 BC. The prophet Jeremiah recorded, “The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon” (Jeremiah 25:1). Jehoiakim’s “fourth year” was 605 BC. However, Daniel declared that Jerusalem was taken by Nebuchadnezzar’s army a year earlier, in the “third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah” (Daniel 1:1), which was the year 606 BC. The historian Henry Fynes Clinton also confirmed in his exhaustive chronological study of ancient history that Prince Nebuchadnezzar led his army against the Kingdom of Judah in the summer of 606 BC.

The Babylonian Empire did not endure for long, however. TheMedo- Persian Empire, led by the powerful kings Darius and Cyrus the Great, conquered the empire and the city of Babylon in 538 BC. But in the years that Nebuchadnezzar ruled the known world, God raised up Daniel, one of Israel’s greatest prophets.

DANIEL’S VISION OF OUR FUTURE

While serving in Babylon’s royal courts, Daniel saw remarkable visions and interpreted inspired dreams. Many of his visions foretold the upheaval in the world that came to pass more than two thousand years ago. In fact, the fulfillment of those prophecies verifies that Daniel was truly God’s prophet. His predictions came true exactly as they were given. However, many of Daniel’s most intriguing prophecies describe events that are still to come. The generation that you and I are part of will see the fulfillment of these last-days prophecies.

In this book we will examine all of Daniel’s prophecies–the ones that were fulfilled long ago and those that are soon to be fulfilled. Excellent Book

I highly recommend this book. It gives great historical accuracy as well as information about what is happening now in preparation for the end times. It also tells you how the believer is to live before the Lord's return. Daniel in the Old Testament was a great example of how to live in spite of the circumstances around him.

There are a few minor details I disagree with such as the Anti-Christ being referred to as the "King of Babylon" and the Assyrian. I also disagree that Babylon will be rebuilt; I believe it's a reference to Rome. They're one of those things where you have to read this book and decide for yourself. Aside from those minor details, I heartily recommend this book.

Historical. Interesting. Insightful. Revealing.

COUNTDOWN TO THE APOCALYPSE is an insightful and interesting study of the book of Daniel and end-times Biblical prophecy.

Grant Jeffrey takes the morning headlines and presents them in the context of Bible prophecy -how and where they fit into future events. The most modern concepts of global warming, cashless economic systems, bio-data chips and the rebirth of military engines in the former Soviet Union, China, India, Japan and other countries were foretold 2,500 years ago to a humble servant of God, Daniel.

Grant draws from the most revealing and detailed Biblical texts in Daniel, Revelation, Ezekiel and the four gospels to paint a picture of the times leading up to the second coming of Christ. He pulls together historical documents to fully explain the events which have already occurred and some which are nearly upon us.

It is fascinating to read about the "signs of the times" in which we live and to be reminded of the hope and glory of the expected end: the triumphant return of the King.

About the Author
Dr. Elmer Towns, vice president of Liberty University, college and seminary professor, dean of the School of Religion, is also the author of numerous popular and scholarly works. He is the 1995 recipient of the coveted Gold Medallion Award awarded by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association for the Book of the Year, The Names of the Holy Spirit. He and Ruth, his wife of 51 years, have three children and ten grandchildren.

Using the prayers from the book of Joshua, Judges and Ruth, Elmer Towns takes the reader back to Old Testament days to challenge them to pray with the conquerors, to conquer personal challenges, and to fulfill their destiny.

Towns combines a unique blend of contemporary illustrations and poignant prayers written in a unique lyrical style while adapting modern day language to provide insight into both the culture and religious practices of the Biblical times. He ingeniously creates a sense of fighting with Joshua on the battlefield, of being in the presence of Gideon as he meets face to face with the Angel of the Lord, on empathizing with Samson in his hour of deepest defeat, or observing Boaz as he becomes kinsman redeemer and marries Ruth.

The highlight of the "Praying the Scriptures Series," for me, continues to be the "My Time to Pray" reflections. These are profound moving prayers that touch the heart of the reader as I'm sure they touch the heart of God as they are prayed.

Elmer Towns' writing is rich in Biblical teaching, cultural background, and in providing geographical settings. The practical life applications and words of encouragement make this series a rich resource for pastors, lay Bible teachers and for individuals eager to grow in their grasp and understanding of Biblical truth. Joshua, Judges, Ruth and Their Prayers

This book is a continuation of 'praying the Scriptures' by this well-known and excellent coommentator on the Word of God. The writer informs us that this book 'is written in poetic stye, combining modern-day language with a lyrical style.' If you are a routine Bible reader or student of the Word this book by Dr. Towns will help you love the Books of Joshua, Judges and Ruth. One of my favorite Books is the Book of Ruth. (Yes, we can have favorites!) The writings in this book of prayers will enlighten your heart. Read in easy language about Joshua and the sometimes more passed-over Book of Judges. I just love the wrtitings of Dr. Towns. Read this book and grow in His Grace and Spirit.

In his book "Praying With the Conquerors" Dr. Towns brings scripture alive with language that is easy to read and understand. His writing style brings the reader into the text in a very personal way. The Old Testament books of Joshua, Judges and Ruth helped me as a believer, to enhance my own personal relationship through the study and application of God's word. This book is a great additon for anyone who desires to seek God's word on a daily basis.
