The text then builds on the main paradigms to shed light on the dynamic process of growth and development, discussing such topics as club convergence, directed technical change, the transition from Malthusian stagnation to sustained growth, general purpose technologies, and the recent debate over institutions versus human capital as the primary factor in cross-country income differences. Finally, the book focuses on growth policies -- analyzing the effects of liberalizing market competition and entry, education policy, trade liberalization, environmental and resource constraints, and stabilization policy -- and the methodology of growth policy design. All chapters include literature reviews and problem sets. An appendix covers basic concepts of econometrics.

Valuable Summary

I use this book as the recommended text for both undergraduate and graduate courses in landscape ecology. It has a useful synthesis of recent trends in the field and particularly good chapters on scale, landscape metrics and disturbance. The accompanying CD has jpeg versions of most of the figures, which is handy for preparing lectures, although the quality of some of the digital images from CD (especially graphs and line charts) isn't so great. The literature review is thorough without being overwhelming, so it's a good entry point into the professional literature in most areas of landscape ecology. My main criticism is that the writing style is somewhat dense; I didn't find it easy to read from cover to cover. People looking for a cursory introduction to the field may do better to start with an alternative text. As a teaching and reference text for landscape ecology, however, I think this book is the best available.

The book to have

This is the excellent book on Landscape Ecology. Instead of being an edited collection of research articles, this volume's chapters follow logically and treat the material comphrensively, while giving references at every turn to researchers books or articles. Monica, whose research publications are extensive, writes this introductory book well.

The images in this book are, however, in black and white. There is an accompanying CD of color plates, but they are no bigger then those in the text and are fairly useless. I was hoping she would have some data for her book's examples and perhaps even a whole project we might use in one of the current software tools.

Still this can't take away from the fact that this is the book I've been searching for. But a very "first" primer in this subject is a chapter written by Monica - "What is Landscape Ecology" for an 1998 Oxford "Ecology" text. You can download this for free. See item 76 of the publications page on Monica website ([...]).

A Must-Have for Anyone into Landscape Ecology or GIS

If the credentials of the authors didn't convince of the quality of this book, I'm not sure I can. I will say that I have read and re-read the book several times, and that it's a vital resource in our laboratory. From the various issues of scaling to what analyses do what, this book is an excellent resource of theories and technologies involved in Landscape Ecology.

A classic for a new generation

This is the book I remember from my childhood, sixty years ago. It was selected by my mother, a children's librarian.

In the past several years, I have given a copy to each of my friends in celebration of their first grandchild and it never fails to please, both for the memories it brings back and the delightful rhythms created by reading aloud. The illustrations are nostaligc but attractive to young eyes, with details to point out, a new one with each reading. And you'll be surprised at the "origins" of many familiar phrases and enjoy hearing these versions of old favorites. (It's as much fun for the grown-ups as the kids.)

I have long advocated reading to babies to get them used to having a book in front of them. If you give a child a love of reading and books, they can teach themselves anything they want to learn.

I appreciate the classics, but many of these rhymes are best left in the past.

This book contains nearly 300 rhymes, which is impressive. I purchased this for my children since I had the same book when I was little.
The familiar rhymes such as Humpty Dumpty, Pat-A-Cake, To Market, Jack, Gorgy Porgy, Three Blind Mice and many others are included. There are other rhymes I never heard of that are delightful and catchy. It is fun reading these to the kids and it has helped foster an appreciation for this type of written work.

I will say though that many of the rhymes don't make sense to the kids (ages 5 and under) and there are some that I don't feel comfortable reading to them. Times have changed for a reason and the kids don't like it when I skip.

For example, "Needles and pins... When a man marries his trouble begins."
"Three children sliding on the ice...had these children been at school...they had not then been drowned..."
"Give the barber a pinch of snuff."
"I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers. I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs."

Others have words that mean something offensive in the present and I would prefer that they don't learn these rhymes because of the way they could be mistakenly interpreted by others (like at school without me there to explain for them).
Such as, "I like little pussy...pussy and I gently will play."
And also, "cock cock cock cock cock..."

If my children were older I could explain the significance of the rhymes and it may help them understand a bit of history, but they are too young for that discussion.

A Classic My Family Has Enjoyed For Decades

I purchased this book as a baby shower gift. I had a Mother Goose book as a child and remember my mother reading it to me. Such nostalgia and warm memories. Mother Goose has captured the imagination of children for decades and fostered a love of reading in me. When I had my daughter, who is now in her twenties, I purchased a Mother Goose for her. We spent time reading together and looking at the vintage illustrations. This book is a classic and I highly recommend it to others.

Trust the Experts

One might think the name 'Emily Post' to be intimidating when it comes to approaching the subject of social etiquette, but what this book, and all previous editions of Emily Post's Etiquette, quickly turns you onto is the fact that 'proper' social interaction isn't that complicated at all.

At the end of the day, what the concept of etiquette comes down to is behaving in a way that shows respect for the people around you. This book is very down to earth; not at all the 'walk straight with a book upon your head' list of rules and regulations we might expect it to be. In fact, I'd like to suggest "The Book of Just Plain Common Sense" as an alternate title. It answers the questions of what to do when your coworkers offend you; whether or not it's a good idea to unfriend that guy on Facebook that you met at a party and has since filled your feed with political propaganda; even how to approach the friend who has a bit of a body odor problem. Is it OK to invite someone to a gathering via email? Sure! Is it OK to keep texting at the dinner table? Probably not.

Whether you're looking for a comprehensive resource, or you're curious to know which fork goes where, this book has all the answers to those questions our modern world forces us to ask. And the Post family does a great job presenting it in a way that doesn't make you feel like a dummy!

Emily Post is not what it used to be

I had long wanted to own a copy of this and finally got around to buying one.

I was definitely in the market for a quaint guide to manners for my edification and amusement.

Unfortunately, the Emily Post empire has changed. Her books from the 60's were unapologetically prescriptive: Do this, Don't do that, Always do . .

But after spending a couple of hours with this book, I believe that over the years the enterprise has been so watered-down that it's now entirely descriptive, instead of prescriptive: Some people do this, others do this. Some otherwise high-class folks can be caught these days resting their elbows on the table during dinner, the editorial staff has noticed.

I know that. I don't need the book to tell me that "Some people hold the door open for ladies, others don't."

Get some balls, guys.

Emily Post Etiquette 18th Edition

At first I was beyond myself with excitement when this book finally arrived. Then I started reading it and was disappointed to see that the beautiful use of the English language and the firm but encouraging tone that characterized earlier editions of Etiquette was not present. I understand that the authors were being colloquial in order to be more "accessible", but it left me quite apathetic as opposed to inspired to be the very best that I could be. Also, etiquette by its very nature is quite conservative, and this book most certainly is not.

Overall it's a good resource, and I mainly wanted this book for the reference material in the back (which, by the way, is extremely useful and the made the entire purchase worth my money), but it was very disappointing to see how our society has become so inelegant that even Emily Post Etiquette has succumbed. Aside from practical advice on technology, I would stick with the 17th Edition by Peggy Post alone.

About the Author
Keith Doyle has over 25 years of experience in the field of optomechanical engineering, working on a diverse range of high-performance optical instruments specializing in the multidisciplinary analysis and integrated modeling of optical systems. He is currently a Group Leader in the Engineering Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He previously served in a variety of roles including Vice President of Sigmadyne, Inc., Senior Systems Engineer at Optical Research Associates, and a Structures Engineer at Itek Optical Systems. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in Engineering Mechanics with a minor in the Optical Sciences in 1993, and he holds a BS degree from Swarthmore College received in 1988. Dr. Doyle is an active participant in SPIE symposia, teaches short courses on optomechanics and integrated modeling, and has authored and coauthored over 30 technical papers in optomechanical engineering.

Dr. Victor Genberg PE has over 45 years of experience in the application of finite element methods to highperformance optical structures, and is a recognized expert in optomechanics. He is currently President of Sigmadyne, Inc. Prior to starting Sigmadyne, Dr. Genberg worked at Eastman Kodak for 28 years, serving as a technical specialist for commercial and military optical instruments. He is an author of SigFit, a commercially available software product for optomechanical analysis. Dr. Genberg is also a full professor (adjunct) of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rochester, where he teaches a variety of courses in finite elements, design, optimization, and optomechanics. He has over 50 publications. He received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1973.

Gregory Michels PE has worked for twenty years in optomechanical design and analysis, and is currently Vice President of Sigmadyne, Inc. He received his MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1994. He specializes in finite element analysis and design optimization of high-performance optical systems. Mr. Michels is also a software developer and technical support engineer for Sigmadyne's optomechanical analysis software product, SigFit. Prior to co-founding Sigmadyne, he worked at Eastman Kodak for five years as a structural analyst on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Mr. Michels has authored or co-authored over 25 papers in the field of integrated optomechanical analysis and teaches short courses on finite element analysis and integrated modeling.

I love it, but it depends on if you are okay with a super cheesy book

Keep this in mind - if you are okay with a super cheesy book, then this is a fantastic short read. I have read the book twice:

1st time I read it was about 4 years ago and I hated it, I thought it was terrible lame.

2nd time I read it was a few months ago and it was an absolute blast. I loved it and highlighted a lot of the book. I just needed to be okay with the fact that the book is super cheesy.

If you can handle cheese, then this is a fantastic business/entrepreneur book!

Relentless teaches how to Rule in life and NOT let life rule you..

I'm a Bible teacher and found this to be an excellent book to study. He brings out new meaning to scripture that I haven't thought about. He teaches me something new every time I read his books and he backs every thing up with scripture.

This volume presents the lives of these brave citizens during the early colonial era, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War.

This volume begins with Armstrong Starkey's detailed description of wartime life during the American Colonial era, beginning with the Jamestown, VA settlement of 1607. Among his discussions of civilian lives during the Pequot War, King Philip's War, and the Seven Years' War, Starkey also examines Native American attitudes regarding war, Puritan lives, and Salem witchcraft and its connection to war. Wayne E. Lee continues with his chapter on the American Revolution, investigating how difficult it was for civilians to choose sides, including a telling look at soldier recruitment strategies. He also surveys how inflation and shortages adversely affected civilians, in addition to disease, women's roles, slaves, and Native Americans as civilians. Richard V. Barbuto discusses the War of 1812, taking a close look at life on the ever-expanding frontier, rural homes and families, and jobs and education in city life. Gregory S. Hospodor observes American life during the Mexican War, examining how that conflict amplified domestic tensions caused by sharply divided but closely-held beliefs about national expansion and slavery. Continuing, James Marten looks at southern life in the South during the Civil War, examining the constant burden of supporting Confederate armies or coping with invading northern ones. Paul A. Cimbala concludes this volume with a look at northerner's lives during the Civil War, offering an outstanding essay on a home front mobilized for a titanic struggle, and how the war, no matter how remote, became omnipresent in daily life.

About the Author

David S. Heidler is an award-winning historian on the faculty of Colorado State University, Pueblo. He is co-author with Jeanne T. Heidler of Encyclopedia of the American Civil War: A Political, Social, and Military History. Dr. Heidler is also co-editor with Jeanne T. Heidler of the series Daily Lives of Civilians during Wartime and American Soldiers' Lives.

Jeanne T. Heidler is Professor of History at the United States Air Force Academy, and an award-winning author. Along with David S. Heidler she is the co-author of Encyclopedia of the American Civil War: A Political, Social, and Military History. Dr. Heidler is also co-editor with David S. Heidler of the series Daily Lives of Civilians during Wartime and American Soldiers' Lives.
