It was Hot this summer Right? well it was hot for me that there was nothing else to do but get a book and sit under A shaded tree and read from many books to choose from I choose this one because I live in California, and because the cover of the book was of was of some interesting natives standing around.... so right off from the start of reading Connecting California I learned about a lot of things that happened in the past. It talks about the padres, the gold rush, and about the native Indians.
it's a real good book and recommend that you get started reading it too....

A new me!

My doctor introduced me to this way of eating by having me try the two week plan. I had my reservations and all the reasons why I could not follow it. but I said I'd try it for two weeks--but no more. I began eating the Sugar Control Program three months ago and will never go back to my old way of eating. I have so much more energy now and I like the food. I'm never hungry and grocery shopping is so very easy: I shop on the outside paramenters of the grocery store. In otherwords, I eat all fresh food now.
I bought the book to learn more about why this works and found it to be very helpful in learning how the body handles nutrients and what the body needs to function properly. Ms Paltis also gives some background on TBM (Total BOdy modification) and using functional physiology in learning how the body works. This book is a great guide and reference if you want to learn improved ways of functioning.

A True Wake-up Call

I decided to buy this book after my chiropractor put me on this diet to help with the chronic lower back pain I've been dealing with for about 6 months now. So I bought the book to learn more about this crazy diet I was supposed to follow. I read the book cover to cover in about 2 days. Not only are all of the nutritional facts fascinating, it was also wonderful to read about how she came to this diet herself and the success her patients have had with it.

I can proudly say that by following this diet, under the supervision of my chiropractor, I feel better than I have in months. The pain isn't completely gone yet, but I've made significant improvements in a short month's time, compared to the endless months I spent in physical therapy and seeing countless other doctors who were simply trying to treat my symptoms.

This diet is actually quite easy to follow, and Paltis does a great job answering the most common questions that naturally arise when one considers cutting sugar out of their diet. I lost 10 pounds in a month, have much more energy, and for the first time in quite a while, I feel like I am truly taking good care of my body.

If you want to get off the sugar see-saw, this book will help you do it!!!!

Saved my life

This book saved both mine and my husbands life. We each lost 40lbs (no exercise!) - and for the first time in my 33 years of life my body responded to it by giving me a regular menstrual cycle - since i was a teen I would only get my period every once every couple of years. It had been 6 years since my last cycle when i started this diet within 7 days I got my period and have had a 28 day regular cycle ever since. It blew my doctors away.

My husband who comes from a long line of sleep apnea sufferers, within 5 days on this 'diet' stopped snoring completely. He went from only sleeping 2 hours a night to 8 straight hours. His depression (from us losing everything in hurricane Katrina) went away and I can even tell when he does accidentally get some sugar in his diet becuase he snores a little. But when he is strict on the program - no snoring - no leg kicking - no sleep apnea. AMAZING!

I feel like the love child of Tom Arnold and Robin Williams this way of life gives my body so much energy and my mind so much focus. Awesome Awesom Awesome!

Endless meandering :-(

I would like to give this book a good review, given the topic. But the title is just bait, for a book of endless meandering. It's basically about the Neo-Platonist concept of the One (in Islam, Tawhid), said over and over and over. The author just calls it the "true nature" instead. If you've read one Rumi poem about "the Beloved" you've read this book. I was so excited by the title, but it was not worth it. Sorry.

The Endlessness of Spiritual Discovery

I have great respect for A H Almaas (Hameed Ali) and the Diamond Approach which he teaches/facilitates as a very comprehensive, thorough, and encompassing spiritual system that addresses the different levels and facets of our being. Here he elaborates on his concepts of runaway realization (brought forth in his last book of the same name) and discusses the ultimate nature of reality, the "philosophers' stone" of the spiritual search. The book is very thought provoking and a powerful statement on the unending potential of spiritual discovery. It is a reminder of, in my opinion, the absolute necessity of keeping the spiritual path open-ended without an ultimate point of arrival.

This is a lovely book for children of all ages.

I really enjoyed The Moonlit Princess. It taught children some valuable lessons. If a child is kind, industrious, and polite and helps someone in need, good things can happen to them. All people could do well to learn these lessons.

Great book to have....

I bought this book eventhough I know how to make french macarons already. I just want to add it on my collections. I truly love this book, great pictures and really have good filling recipes.

Anyway, I can understand why the others gave it a bad reviews. For you to actually learn how to make proper macarons, either watch a step by step video (has to be very detail), or take a class (which I did). There's some major technique details that you have to learn, and reading a recipe online or books are not going to help. Even when I took the class, I wasted 3 batches when I did it on my own. And if you are seriously wants to learn, invest on a scale. U.S. measurements aren't going to cut it. You need to measure in grams to get an accurate results. And from experience, Italian meringue method is better than French or Swiss meringue method.. And I agree with "Carmen Adorno". This is a very delicate cookie so "Repetition" is the key. I always take orders from my friends because it gives me practice.

Good for Ideas but Impractical for Learning

I have been baking macarons for a few months now. I was excited to see that the Herme book would be available for the English market. First of all you must know that Herme uses the Italian method in making his macarons. No French, no Swiss. I don't particularly like handling boiling sugar, so this was a big disappointment to me. I prefer the French method which requires no soft ball stage boiling of sugar to make a meringue. Temperatures are in metric units, which doesn't bother me, but may bother some people. I have become accustomed to measuring in grams. There is no way around it in this precise art form.

This book is targeted toward those already familiar with baking macarons. It offers no trouble shooting guide. You are on your own if things don't turn out quite like the beautiful pictures in the book. The ingredients used in the recipes can be quite exotic to America. The resource guide in the back of the book provides names and websites of suppliers, but most are in the UK or France. The recipes produce impractical quantities of macarons. 144 shells = 72 macarons? That is 6 dozen macarons per batch! Be prepared to make only 1/2 or 1/3 the recipe. You don't want 6 dozen macarons that you decide you or no one else likes.

It's a beautiful book given its pictures. It can spark your imagination in producing your own recipes. However, this book is not practical for the novice. In addition, it has not been properly translated for use in the US market.

If you are looking for a book to begin your journey into the world of macarons, I recommend Les Petits Macarons by Gordon and McBride.

For the Macaron Making Purest

It took me a long time to get up the courage to tackle the art of macaron making. The methods here and flavor profiles are the real deal and yes, they are expensive to make. But the results make the complicated process and the price worth it. If your goal is trying to create some of the best macarons you'll ever eat, share, or sell, this book will get you there.

As other reviewers have noted, the description of making the Italian meringue is vague in the recipes, but the introductory section of the book explains in painstaking step-by-step photos how to make each element and what it should look like. Adjustments may need to be made depending on your ingredients and environment. The recipes for the fillings alone (which of course are the best part of the macaron), is worth the price of the book. Some favorites macarons from the book include Bitter Chocolate, Americano (grapefruit), Lemon, Coffee, Salted-Butter Caramel, Infinitely Chocolate and Infinitely Vanilla.
