A must for Zelazny or Roleplaying fans.

A book worth having even if you don't spend hours playing it like my friends and I did. I played this game before I ever read the Amber books and it got me interested in them. It does a good job of catching the spirit of the novels. For those who haven't read the novels the story deals with a family of dimension travelling imortals and their kingdom Amber. For Zelazny fans it offers an overview and in depth information about the books. For RPG fans it gives an interesting new take on character creation and conflict resolution. Yes the system does have some bugs but I think the innovation otuweighs some of the tehcnical misteps. As is billed there's no dice. Connflict is resolved by the GM looking at your ranking and assesing the situation. So if you're an Amberite and you're fighting some normal human off in shadow you'll win. If you're fighting another Amberite then, evertyhing else being equal, the guy with the better fighting ability will win every time. This means that you need a good GM who knows how to be fair and keep the story going. But the book has some nice hints on how to run a good session. Character creation is one of the most interesting parts of the game. Instead of simply rolling for, or purchasing attributes the attributes are settled in an auction wiith all players participating. Players are competing for ranks in one of four attributes (Warfare, Strength, Stamina, and Psyche). Whoever bids the most in an attribute is ranked 1st and they can automatically beat the other players in a straight up, contest in that attribute. layers can spend as littlle or as much as they like on these auctions (we had one guy once who spent 90 points out of 100 on the Warfare attribute). But make sure to leave points left over to buy powers (logrus, pattern, sorcery), objects (maical horses or armor, or even demon skateboards, you purchase the qualities you want for them), and extras (allies, family members, personal shadow realities to design to your taste). Any points left over after all this become "good stuff". Any extra points you spend beyond 100 (there's no limit) become "bad stuff". These are this games version of luck and can effect everything from combat, to personal interaction to your own perceptions. Some of this is a bit heady. Your average Amberite (unranked in any attribute) is superhumanly strong and better at combat than the best martial artist on earth. Magic items that you might salivate over in another game can come ridiculously cheap. Sorcery, a versatile if troublesome ability, is one of the cheapest of powers. The only catch is that there's always someone more powerufl than you out there. And the Amber game encourages the GM to through nasty tricks your way. The conflict resolution system leaves a lot of power in the GMs hands and somewhat forces people to think more about story and strategy than about the percentages. Since you don't now how the monster you're fighting compares to you there's a bit more drama. He could be a pushover or he could be able to kill you instantly. This is hardly the perfect game and it won't be to everyones taste. It does take a fairly skilled GM and players who are flexible and interested more in playing through a story than just hacking and slashing their way through stat books of monsters. But I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different in RPGs or even someone who just enjoys a good RPG book.

Amber's Favorite Game; now, anyone can play!

When I first saw the Amber RPG, my eye dropped to the "Diceless" part and I immediately walked on. "How," I wondered to myself, "...can a GameMaster keep the players honest and under control without an infallibly impartial element of randomness?" (What can I say, I never thought that one could 'load' d10s or d20s...) Later, as I read more and more in-depth essays discussing the nature of role-playing and role-players, I realized that there was a way to play without dice... it involved a couple of strange concepts called 'mutual trust' and 'maturity'. If the players are more interested in having fun and telling a story with each other and the GameMaster, then the dice aren't necessary.

Anyway, about the product itself: I'm fascinated by the ideas discussed here, especially the multiple versions of the major NPCs depending on the needs of individual campaigns. With the original author's input (Roger Zelazny, regarless of what Prince Corwin the Mad may have to say on the issue), several key points were expanded into genuinely playable elements in the game.

My minor concerns are with the layout: it was first released in 1986 and Phage Press apparently hasn't been able to put together a revised edition since then.

Still, it's a great resource for fans of the original novels, for gamers who aren't afraid to tell stories without worrying about getting dice-screwed, and the like. Buy it!

Diceless Rolplaying: A purist's dream

So you play AD&D. Ever get upset when you tell the DM exactly, to the letter, how you want your character to perform an action, that should have worked, then got screwed on the die roll?
Play Amber.
Amber's diceless system emphasizes roleplaying above all else. Even if you should lose, sometimes you can still win. It's all in how you play the game. Character development is stressed above all else. There's just no place for power-gaming in this system. There is no limit to what your character can do..he or she is effectively a god. Consider:
GM: Okay, you're standing on a hill in Shadow. What would you like to do?
Power Gamer: I want to destroy the planet!
GM: Okay, it happens. What now?
Power Gamer: Err...what?
This kind of play obviously gets old. When nothing is beyond your character's power( except, of course, his siblings ) character relationships and development become foremost. In Amber there are no sure things: It's all how you play the game. Develop your character or get out.

Nothing less than five stars!

The last reviewer obviously does NOT appreciate Musil in any true sense. There are no "unnecessarily longwinded, only somewhat interesting, conversations" --the reader who thinks this way has definitely ignored Musil's central concept of "Essayismus," which is essential to any understanding of the book. With this "essayism" Musil strove to find the perfect balance between the antipodes of life--art and science (clearly evident in the book's style), precision and soul, intuition and logic. It is the path to Utopia.

Musil's "anti-Semitism": The last reviewer points this out as a factor which might put off some readers. This is comparable to putting an emphasis on Dostoevsky's alleged anti-Semitism--you end up missing the whole point. By the way, Musil's wife Martha was Jewish. After Hitler's rise to power, the Musils, like many other intellectuals, fled to Switzerland. I don't know where one finds any anti-Semitism in Musil.

This book is highly rewarding when given the time. Don't be turned off by the length. It is much easier to read than Joyce and Proust and can actually be a real page-turner. Anyone who gives it less than five stars is just not getting it.

The Kindle version is only ~70% of the whole thing!!!!

Beware of the kindle edition! It does not contain the poshumous papers included in the print editions. This is, mind you, about 30% of the whole work.
The novel (?) itself is incredible, but it requires genuine dedication.

This extraordinary novel, told in non-linear time and with many eddies and currents, captures the last of the "golden years" of the 19th century--technically the early 20th--when people in Vienna still clung to their traditions, their emperor, their rigid social order. A microscopic look at the middle European world before the abyss told through the viewpoint of a highly attractive and intellectual man, too individual for his time, a man, perhaps, of the future.

From "Six" to "Eight"

"Eight American Poets," edited by Joel Conarroe, is a fine anthology. The introduction notes that this book was "designed as a companion volume to 'Six American Poets,'" also edited by Conarroe. "Eight" follows the same plan as "Six": rather than anthologize a huge company of poets who are represented by only a few pieces each, each of Conarroe's books focuses on a relatively small group of poets, each of whom is represented by a substantial selection. Conarroe's approach allows the reader to get a fuller feel of each poet in the anthology format.
The poets of "Eight" are Theodore Roethke, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Allen Ginsburg, and James Merrill. Each poet's work is prefaced by a substantial individual introduction.
There are many masterpieces in this book. Curiously, I found the most compelling poems to be those that focus on nature: Roethke's "The Meadow Mouse," Bishop's "The Fish," Plath's "Mushrooms," and Merrill's "The Octopus." Poems like these combine skillfully used language with keen insight, and reveal these poets to be true heirs of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson (two of the featured artists in "Six American Poets").
Overall, I felt that "Eight" was not as strong as its sister volume, "Six." Although there are many poetic masterpieces in "Eight," there is also much material which, in my opinion, hasn't aged well. The so-called "confessional poetry" of some of these writers strikes me as overwrought. Some of the longer poems failed to resonate with me. I was particularly disappointed by Berryman's "Homage to Mistress Bradstreet," especially since I am an admirer of Anne Bradtreet's own work. Admittedly, this criticism may merely reflect my own personal tastes, but I submit it for the reader's consideration.
The fact that so many of these poets either wrote about each other, or pop up in the editor's introductions to each others' work, sometimes gives the book as a whole a creepy, incestuous feel. And the fact that so many of these poets committed suicide, had long-term mental health problems, and/or suffered from addictions further gives the book as a whole a rather morbid feel. On second thought, maybe this group of eight is a bit problematic!
Still, editor Conarroe has assembled an impressive anthology that I would recommend for students and teachers, as well as to a general readership. Although a mixed bag, "Eight American Poets" contains some truly enduring work by an octet whose legacy is secure.

An excellent introduction to 8 major poets

For someone just coming into an appreciation of poetry-somewhat suspiciously like myself-Conarroe's anthology approach is perfect: concentrate on just a few major poets and provide an introduction to each and a generous sampling of their poetry.

I have owned this book for several years now and it introduced me to what are now some of my favorite poets (Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell). It is a book that I go back to time and time again, and I encourage anyone to include it in their collection.

Ah, a fine comparison and contrast in studies on the eight best american confessional poets ever. Kudos to the editor on a fine choice of poems, and candid biographies on each poet. Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Allen Ginsberg, John Berryman, Theodore Roethke, Elizabeth Bishop and the other guy, here's to you.

Great overview of the M&A Process

This book provides a great overview of an M&A deal. There is a lot of information on finding a deal, valuation of the deal, financing the deal, due diligence, closing and post merger integration. The book also has a special section for legal considerations in an m&a deal with public companies and dealing with companies involved in bankruptcy etc.

A great book =)

Prom Date is a great YA thriller.
There is a break-in at the dress shop called, the Quartet. Some prom dresses are destroyed. The destroyed dresses were gonna be worn to the prom by some of the most popular girls of Toomey High, whom Margaret Dunne and her friends referred to as the 'Pops'.
The book really starts out on Chapter-3, where the Toomey High School senior picnic is being held. The main character, Margaret is bored and goes to the old aging lighthouse, which she loves going to despite the danger and warning signs. As she listened to the breakers crashing into the rocks she is met by the voice of Mitch McGill, one of the most popular/nicest boy from her school. They chatted for a little while and end up talking about the break-in at her mother's dress shop, the Quartet. Mitch's brother was one of the cops that night. While they were walking back to the picnic they heard a scream that came from the lighthouse. They ran back.
They find the body of Stephanie Markham(one of the 'pops') in the water.
People think that it was just an accident and think that the old rail on the lighthouse has just finally gave way... which led to Stephaie's dreadful fall, but then there are those that know differently...
There is someone out there that would just do about anything to get a prom date... but who is it?
I thought the ending was wonderful, almost made me teary eyed =)

Dear Diane Hoh, The book that you wrote, The Prom Date, Was a very good book. It left me on the edge of my seat. Especially at the end when Liza walked into the prom. I thought she was looking to kill someone, but all she wanted was a dance with Mitch. The way you wrote this book was amazing; because of how the reader can never stop turning the page. No matter what page the reader is on, there are always exciting things coming up. The most exciting part of the book was when Stephanie was hanging off of the lighthouse and the killer would not help her, but nudged her hands so that she would fall to the sharp rocks below. The way that you wrote that part was amazing because it all didn't happen at one time but in a period of time. I loved how you described the settings like at the school, the prom, at the Quartet, and at the lighthouse, because it all worked together to form the understanding of who the killer was. Most of all that showed who the killer was, was when the dresses were found out side of the Quartet, and at the lighthouse. I understand that the plot was to figure out who the killer was by reading the book. But some parts of the book were confusing because of how it was set up to appear to the reader, as a certain person was the killer but at some parts it didn't point to one person but almost all of the characters in the book. But at the end it all went down to one person. In conclusion I don't really recommend this book to younger than 8th grade readers because it's really sometimes hard to understand and it also has a lot of killing and horror in it. If I were to rate this book I would give it 4 stars because it's not the best book that I have read but it is a good book for everyone to read. Even adults could read this book them too would like it a lot. I hope my review was helpful to you and I plan on reading a lot more of you books.

It should have been noted in the description of this book that all hand written entries are in French. I purchased this as a gift for an elderly commercial fisherman who spent over 55 years at sea. How many old fishermen do you know that can speak let alone read French? The pictures are excellent and most of the narrative is fine. However, it just wasn't what I expected.

Very Powerful Documentary of Man in Nature !

Jean Gaumy mentioned in the introduction, 'It'll come on its own. I don't know how. I want to go out to sea and the desire contains this seed. It can't be about reporting. It's about something else. I don't really know what. I'll have to describe. Simply describe. Avoid deception, the heroic vein. Stick with just man.'
It is a series of journey spreading across 1984 to 1998, in pursing for photographer's self-fulfillment. Doing things purely for oneself is great, and we can see Jean's total enthusiam into the process. Travelling with ordinary fishmen, everything is like adventures on those traditional trawlers. The process can be dangerous and fruitful. Excellent capture of environment in low light condition using high speed film, where you can see the magic of night and sea. It also includes excerpt from Jean's diary, hand-drawing, and page-clippings. Very rich media combining with visual images. We can taste some subtle changes of photographer's body and mind, which is behind the scene.
A raw and original presentation of images presents a powerful record of struggle between human and nature.
Forget Titanic. Jean Gaumy's are some moving images, from heart.

About the Author
Robert A. Meyers obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of California at Los Angeles. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology and has more than 17 patents, 50 technical papers and 12 books to his name. As Editor-in-Chief he conceived and edited several ambitious multivolume reference works, e.g. the Encyclopedia of Analytical Chemistry (Wiley), the Encyclopedia of Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine (Wiley-VCH) and the Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology (Academic Press).
