Good book about how we are called to shine-to live in such a way that others would see Christ's character radiating in us to the glory of God the Father. When Christ shines in us, we represent His Kingdom on earth.

great book for daily life and life @ work

3 reasons why this book is important to read:
1 - because we were made to shine. Jesus said in Matthew 5 that it's through our God-saltiness and our God-brightness in daily life that people see this gracious and loving God who wants to shine in and through us. It's what we were made for. It's how God is know.

2- because Kris calls us to beyond-self living, and it's only when we live beyond ourselves that life works, that we are empowered and in-powered for living.

3 - because being the church is an all 168 hours of the week thing, and Kris challenges us to that kind of living and that kind of loving and that kind of leading.

Check it out and pass it along to the people that you listen to and lead in your life.

Best book in existence for people involved in "Business As Missions"

Without a doubt, this is by far the best book I've ever read on the subject of running a business following Christian principals. Kris very clearly shows you how he was able to get his business going in a successful direction while honoring the truths found in God's word, and not hiding the fact that their success came directly from God. He also shows you how you can freely demonstrate your faith and dedication (to God) to your clients, your employees, and the community around you... And how their response is one of complete trust in how you conduct business, regardless of their own religious beliefs. I've been known to use the highlighter rather extensively when reading a good book, but I pretty much wore my highlighter out with all that I wanted to go back and reference at a later date. I loved how much he references specific scripture all throughout the entire book. It even helped me a great deal during a time when I had to go back to working as an employee (rather than small business owner) doing very physically demanding work... The concept of knowing that I was working "as unto the Lord" was very vividly in my mind after reading Shine... There's really great principals explained for employees to follow. And because Kris even shares how he handled a very challenging time in his life, when he nearly lost his young 9 yr old daughter Gracyn, I was encouraged to continue walking in faith no matter what I was dealing with... I still get it out from time to time for encouragement and inspiration. I hope to someday soon have my business become a very successful enterprise... One that provides people with work they can feel proud of, and truly enjoy being a part of, and at the same time honors the Lord. I've always wanted my business to be based on God's principals found in the Bible, but the best example of how that business should function has all been laid out here in this book by Kris DenBesten. I've recently heard that Kris will soon be releasing a new revised edition under a similar name, so I plan to get that too, just as soon as its released.

really is not that good. I would suggest getting another book as well ...

I'm new to the unix/linux system. Learning because of all the commotion as of late in the cyber world. This book did not seem very intuitive to me, examples are created and aren't explained as made up instead you end up creating meaningless files and have to apply the characteristics to normal behavior.
The book also does not explain some things that should be explained in the begining of the book. Usually they will have something that says "see chapter 5 for more details on -----" but not always the case, especially the email talk. They talk about emails and perusing email in early chapters but it isnt until 220 pages into the book that you actually find anything differently. I needed this book for a class in college, really is not that good. I would suggest getting another book as well as this one, possibly about shell commands. I'll update this later if I find one. The humor is very dry and pretentious to say the least, reddit users would have a ball tearing this guy to shreds.

Honestly I learned a lot with this book but I also put 20+ hours in doing so with many revisitations. This book wouldnt be bad as a reference but does not do justice as a introductory "quickstart"

Also reading the other person's review - if this book is nearly identical to the previous version you'd be better off getting the previous version. what they may have added was the indexes at the end (which are actually helpful).

Nicely written BUT not helpful as a learning tool

Unless this is assigned for a class (which is why I bought it) I would bypass this for almost anything else. The one benefit of this book is the clearly written text and the attractive layout. BUT many of the graphics showing code and output have been shrunk so much to fit them into neat columns that they are literally illegible without a magnifying glass. So you miss whatever the point of those examples might be. Moreover, coverage of many areas that are important for beginners is absent or skimpy.

I was lucky to be able to find supplementary material from the library to get me through the class - this was pretty inadequate.

Don't see any difference between this 5th edition and the previous edition (which I have). Page for page the book seems to be identical. Which is probably the reason why the authors haven't explained in the intro why they've bothered with a new edition.

I got an older edition of this for my brother who is easily led astray by cranks and quacks who prey on people with little knowledge of human physiology or nutrition. (He's great on quantum physics and advanced math, but not bio sciences.) He's very happy with it and already has done some checking into info on Vitamin D. He hasn't reported any concerns either with the info presented nor with his ability to make sense of the science without much of a background beyond high school biology. I'd recommend it to anyone curious about nutritional issues or who find themselves lost between news stories of recent research results and counter-claims about the info presented.
If you've made it theough high school chemistry you would likely find this text useful.

As a text book I cant say, but for general information perhaps I can.

Not being a student needing this text book for a course I probably cant evaluate it meaningfully. As a lay person I find it huge, thick, and disorganized, although very professionally presented. If I were a student using this book for a course I would have no idea how to study for a test because there is too much disorganized information on every single page; in fact on every single part of ever page and there are hundreds and hundreds of pages.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The author John Biggar is a professional mountaineering instructor based in Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. His first publication was an internal report for the nuclear physics department at Edinburgh University, entitled "Anisotropies in the Sequential Break-up of Li6". Since those days John has done little nuclear physics but has been climbing and ski-mountaineering in the Andes a lot. He has climbed many of the highest peaks, including 19 of the 20 highest, made over 100 ascents of 6000m peaks, plus 180 ascents of Andean 5000m peaks. He has made first ascents of six 6000m peaks and also made the first ski descent of Domuyo, the highest peak in Patagonia. A professional mountaineering instructor, he runs a business which specialises in mountaineering, skiing and ski-mountaineering expeditions to South America.

the descriptions and the maps should be improved (there is a german book die Anden = the Andes, which is significantly better in the respect), but the total effort and being there first merit 3.5 stars for me (I have all editions and the improvements are at times small). Having climbed 16 6000 including the 9 highest (except Huarascan) I know some regions well.

About the Author

Frank H. Netter was born in New York City in 1906. He studied art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design before entering medical school at New York University, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1931. During his student years, Dr. Netter’s notebook sketches attracted the attention of the medical faculty and other physicians, allowing him to augment his income by illustrating articles and textbooks. He continued illustrating as a sideline after establishing a surgical practice in 1933, but he ultimately opted to give up his practice in favor of a full-time commitment to art. After service in the United States Army during World War II, Dr. Netter began his long collaboration with the CIBA Pharmaceutical Company (now Novartis Pharmaceuticals). This 45-year partnership resulted in the production of the extraordinary collection of medical art so familiar to physicians and other medical professionals worldwide. Icon Learning Systems acquired the Netter Collection in July 2000 and continued to update Dr. Netter’s original paintings and to add newly commissioned paintings by artists trained in the style of Dr. Netter. In 2005, Elsevier Inc. purchased the Netter Collection and all publications from Icon Learning Systems. There are now over 50 publications featuring the art of Dr. Netter available through Elsevier Inc.

Dr. Netter’s works are among the finest examples of the use of illustration in the teaching of medical concepts. The 13-book Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations, which includes the greater part of the more than 20,000 paintings created by Dr. Netter, became and remains one of the most famous medical works ever published. The Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy, first published in 1989, presents the anatomic paintings from the Netter Collection. Now translated into 16 languages, it is the anatomy atlas of choice among medical and health professions students the world over.

The Netter illustrations are appreciated not only for their aesthetic qualities, but, more importantly, for their intellectual content. As Dr. Netter wrote in 1949 “clarification of a subject is the aim and goal of illustration. No matter how beautifully painted, how delicately and subtly rendered a subject may be, it is of little value as a medical illustration if it does not serve to make clear some medical point.” Dr. Netter’s planning, conception, point of view, and approach are what inform his paintings and what make them so intellectually valuable.

Frank H. Netter, MD, physician and artist, died in 1991.

Frank Netter, MD is the ultimate artist in medical illustrations. His background in art/drawing coupled with his detailed knowledge of anatomy comes to light in this CIBA series of books. Nowhere will you find better quality illustrations.

somewhat outdated in some of the material, it is nevertheless classic, inimitable Netter. the anatomy plates are still the best around and I return to them again and again to review the basics.

Comprehensive but difficult

As a nuclear engineering graduate student, I expected to understand most of what was discussed, but the book is highly technical and really requires a further understanding of quantum mechanics. If you haven't had an introduction to modern physics course, or have equivalent knowledge, you won't be able to appreciate the philosophical points. With some knowledge, an understanding of the original philosophical considerations of quantum mechanics is gained by reading this book. Additionally, expect this book to take a very long time to read--I took more than four months to finish and I can usually read even technical things of comparable length in less than a week.

Finally, I like the portrait of Bohr that is presented in this book. Usually he is shown as extremely abstracted and highly intelligent, but largely as a caring person--more the human side. This book helped me understand the level of his genius without showing him as inhumanly scientific or emphasizing his assistance to other scientists during the WWII.

Sophisticated Philosophy and Physics

This book is concerned with the philosophical interpretation of quantum physics that Bohr developed over his career (and thus, over the development of quantum physics), but there are fairly explicit physical arguments (Gedanken experiments) that clearly expose the issues at hand. This is very appropriate for Bohr's work.

The presentation of Bohr's argument with Einstein on the time/energy uncertainty inequality is the clearest I have ever seen.

For people interested in the meaning of quantum mechanics: You will need to know the quantum physics. There are also a couple of very detailed chapters on other philosophers' views of Bohr and quantum physics, including fairly recent commentary.
