About the Author
W. Bruce Allen (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. For many years he was the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. He is an internationally recognized expert in transportation economics, and he specializes in demand theory and logistics. In addition to his duties at Wharton, Professor Allen teaches each summer in India and consults for numerous companies domestically and abroad. He has won a number of teaching awards, including the coveted Anvil Award, the highest teaching honor at Wharton since it is voted on by the students.

Keith Weigelt (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is the Rebecca and Morris Marks Professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in business strategy, game theory, and tournaments, with articles published in the following leading journals: Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Business, and Management Science. Professor Weigelt has won numerous teaching awards, most recently the Undergraduate Division Excellence in Teaching Award and the “Tough, but I will thank you in 5 years” Award.

Neil A. Doherty (Ph.D. Cranfield Institute) is the Frederick H. Ecker Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in corporate risk management, and is the author of Integrated Risk Management (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Professor Doherty has also won numerous teaching awards.

The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was an internationally recognized expert in the economics of technology and industrial organization. His numerous texts, all published by W.W. Norton, have sold millions of copies around the world. In 1979, when Sino-American scientific agreements were finally reached, Mansfield was the first American economist to lecture in the People's Republic of China.

Too wordy, not enough depth

First I will admit to not reading the entire book, just the chapters required for a managerial economics class I was taking.

That aside this is one of the least informative books I've used in my academic or professional career. The main issues I have with the book is it is a very topical read (i.e. pointlessly wordy) with very little depth and like a lot of academic reads it really does not focus on application. (You'd think a book with Managerial in the title would focus 80% of its effort on application.)
The end result is a book that seems to make fairly simple topics sound complex and difficult while minimizing the complexity of more difficult subjects all the while not helping to improve your ability to make economic managerial decisions.

Never use this book

Truly one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to deal with. Nothing is explained clearly and the problems at the end of the chapters do not reflect the information in the chapter. They use *for lack of a better word* stupid phrases throughout the book (ex. Enough chat; let's get serious) that distract from the already bad explanations.

Worst econ book ever

So, my minor is in economics, so I'm pretty well versed in econ. In grad school, Managerial Econ was one of my requirements so I thought it would be pretty easy, until I got this book. The questions, examples, and the writing - none of it makes sense to me. This is THE worst econ book I've ever seen. WORST. Hands. Down.

About the Author
Marie J. Morreale, OTR/L, CHT�is an adjunct faculty member at Rockland Community College, State University of New York. She has been teaching students in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program there since 1998. Marie’s courses include Professional Issues and Documentation, OT Skills, Geriatric Principles, and Advanced OT Skills. Early in her teaching career, she taught several other courses in the OTA Program such as Therapeutic Activities and Advanced Therapeutic Activities. Besides making significant contributions to curriculum development, Marie also served as interim coordinator of the OTA Program. � ��

Marie graduated summa cum laude from Quinnipiac College in Hamden, CT (now Quinnipiac University) with a BS in occupational therapy. She has worked in a variety of OT practice settings including inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, long-term care, adult day care, home health, cognitive rehabilitation, and hand therapy. Marie has been a Certified Hand Therapist since 1993 and also served several years on a home health Professional Advisory Committee, consulting on quality assurance issues. In addition to co-writing the prior edition of this book, Marie wrote a chapter on documentation for The Occupational Therapy Manager, 5th Edition and has published several OT articles. She is also the author of two online continuing education courses. Marie was selected for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and, when not teaching, is active in her church community and enjoys anything travel-related. � � �

Sherry Borcherding, MA, OTR/L�recently retired from the faculty of University of Missouri-Columbia, where she taught for 15 years. During the time she was on the faculty, she taught disability awareness; complementary therapies; clinical ethics; frames of reference; psychopathology; loss and disability; long-term care; wellness; and a three-semester fieldwork sequence designed to develop critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and documentation skills. Two of her courses were designated as campus writing courses, and one was credentialed for computer and information proficiency. As a part of the fieldwork and documentation courses, she filmed simulated occupational therapy interventions for student use in class. Three of these “movies” are available on www.efacultylounge.com with this edition of the book. ��

Sherry graduated with honors from Texas Woman’s University, Denton, TX with a BS in occupational therapy, and went on to complete her master’s in special education with special faculty commendation at George Peabody College, Nashville, TN. Following her staff positions in rehabilitation, home health, and pediatrics, she assumed a number of management roles, including Chief Occupational Therapist at East Texas Treatment Center, Kilgore, TX, and at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center, Columbia, MO, as well as Director of Rehabilitation Services at Transitional Housing Agency, Columbia, MO. She also planned, designed, and directed occupational therapy programs at Capitol Regional Medical Center, Jefferson City, MO, and at Charter Behavioral Health Center, Columbia, MO. � � � �

Sherry is a lifelong learner. Since her retirement, she has further expanded her private practice devoted to complementary and alternative therapies. She is certified in craniosacral therapy at the techniques level through Upledger Institute, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and is attuned as a Reiki master. She volunteers with the Community Emergency Response Team affiliated with the fire department, and with the Medical Reserve Corps affiliated with the public health department. For leisure, Sherry enjoys music, dance, and all kinds of three-dimensional art. Her pottery has appeared in several local shows over the past few years.

This is a great book for those who may need help with documentation. This book gives you the terminology that insurance companies need to see in your documentation. It has a lot of practice spaces with the answers in the back of the book. This is a must get book for students!

A Disappointing Anthology of Bluegrass Tablature

I would expect a better anthology from a respectable company like HL. This was put together haphazardly, and there are a number of flaws to the presentation. The songs are NOT listed alphabetically, but somewhat-alpha. Many of the credits are incorrect. For example, a number of songs that were made popular by The Stanley Brothers and Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys are credited to Ralph, when in reality they were written by brother Carter Stanley. The biggest flub is the inclusion of "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Instead of providing sheet music/tablature of one of the two versions recorded by Bill Monroe, the publisher chose to present the rockabilly version made famous by Elvis Presley (complete with stuttering lyrics). As a listing of best-known bluegrass songs, this book is good. However, there are definitely better bluegrass "fake books" out there.

Disappointing anthology

This is not a terrible book; it's just a little juvenile and might be disappointing to the adult devotee who, seduced by the word "big" in the title, might be expecting a more comprehensive compilation of classic bluegrass songs. As soon as I received and examined my copy I donated it to the local creative arts high school library, where it should be a good fit.

Great source for original lyrics and sheet music

I hope that some royalties make it to the various parties responsible for these even if the original composers have died. Some of the lyrics and song keys have changed as I suppose is common with "folk" type music that is commonly passed down in an oral tradition but a handy resource for bluegrassers seeking original source material. Yes a lot of credits are given to the first person who got it down on paper after many years in the public domain but what are you gonna do?

A faithful defense of a Christian doctrine

James E. Dolezals' book is among the best and most vitally needed accounts of the doctrine of God written in the past few decades. The doctrine of divine simplicity is the doctrinal foundation for God's aseity, immutability, infinity, and omniscience - indeed God's very absoluteness. That Dolezal was able to explicate and defend the doctrine so clearly and convincingly is a remarkable service for a contemporary theological comprehension of God's absolute nature.

It is important to note that the conclusions wrought in "God without Parts" are not the product of an autonomous natural theology. Instead, "God without parts" seeks to explicate the words of the Westminster Confession of Faith which stipulates that God is "without body, parts, or passions..." Therefore this book should be commended to any pastor or student who wishes to understand the meaning of the Westminster Confession, especially as Dolezal enters into the 17th century English divine's thought-world and uses their philosophical assumptions in his presentation of the uncompounded God. And while the book is written with Reformed convictions, there is a catholicity that is upheld throughout. If the many various theological traditions are to come to any agreement on the doctrine of salvation or the doctrine of the church, they must first concur on the absolute nature of the God Christians are to worship.

Right now, especially in the evangelical world, and even amongst those who consider themselves in line with Reformed Orthodoxy, there is an unfortunate lack of understanding of the sheer metaphysical austerity and intellectual complexity of the classic denial of composition in God. Even more disappointing, there is little acknowledgement of the disastrous theological consequences that must obtain if divine simplicity is denied, as it is denied in so many theological sectors. With this in view, I cannot recommend any other work that would clarify and faithfully represent the kinds of parts that are being denied of God by classical Christian theism. While much of the book takes its cue from Aquinas, there is also plenty of interaction with the Reformed tradition, with which Dolezal mainly agrees, and contemporary analytic philosophy of religion, which Dolezal mainly attacks.

There is one caution that should be registered: Dolezal's book explains the metaphysical tools with which he is working, but it would help the reader to have some background in classical metaphysics (especially Thomistic metaphysics). For this, Joseph Owen's "Elementary Christian Metaphysics" is a good introduction and glossary of the kinds of concepts used throughout Dolezal's book. This is not to say Dolezal's "God without Parts" does not stand alone, only that denying parts in God assumes some philosophical grasp of what parts are.

A Much Needed Defense of an Important Doctrine

James Dolezal's book is an excellent defense of the vitally important but much maligned and often misunderstood doctrine of divine simplicity. Dolezal's aim is to defend the doctrine against its recent critics and to show how the doctrine is foundational for the doctrines of God's aseity, immutability, infinity, and omniscience.

Dolezal's primary opponents are analytical philosophers of religion and evangelical theologians influenced influenced by them. Dolezal builds his defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity primarily on the work of Aquinas and contemporary Thomists although Dolezal also interacts positively with the early church fathers and the Reformed tradition, especially 16th and 17th century theologians.

Dolezal makes a convincing case for the continuing importance of divine simplicity. Given the centrality of the doctrine for orthodox theology from the church fathers to the Reformers it is shocking to see how easily it is rejected by many Protestant theologians today. Hopefully, Dolezal's book will at least cause people to think twice about rejecting the doctrine. Prospective readers should be warned that the book, which began life as a dissertation, contains quite a lot of philosophical discussion that employs a large number of technical terms, both scholastic and analytical. However, given the importance of the doctrine and the excellence of its defense in this book, the perseverance of the reader is commended. There is no other book like this one on the market.

Strong Defense of the Doctrine of Divine Simplicity

As you can gather from the subtitle, the focus of Dolezal's work is the attribute of divine simplicity, which he sees as "indispensable for the traditional understanding of doctrines such as God's aseity, unity, infinity, immutability, and eternity" (67). What you cannot gather from the subtitle is that this work is heavily indebted to Thomas Aquinas, and Dolezal takes readers through a guided tour of his writings on the topic. In essence then, it is a kind of exercise in retrieval theology. That is, Dolezal takes us back to Aquinas in order to answer modern objections to a traditionally held understanding of the doctrine of God.

Chapter 1 charts the landscape of modern thought on the doctrine of divine simplicity. Dolezal wants the reader to understand the objections that have been raised before he begins his defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity (which gets abbreviated DDS). Chapter 2 then explains the philosophical nature of composition, that is, what it would mean to be composed of "parts." This is done in order to contrast with the notion of simplicity. With this foundation laid, Dolezal can turn in chapter 3 to give the theological rationale for the DDS itself. It is here that Dolezal argues that DDS "supplies the strength of absoluteness" to the attributes of God I mentioned above. This thread of the argument continues into chapter 4 and 5, the former focusing on simplicity and aseity, and the latter on simplicity and the other attributes. The final two chapters discuss issues related to DDS and God's absolute knowledge and DDS and divine freedom.

To give you a feel for Dolezal's writing style as well as to sum up his argument, here is part of his conclusion:

It has been my contention throughout this study that unless God is identical with all that is in him, and it entirely devoid of all passive potency, one cannot designate him as "most absolute." If he were composed of parts then whatever absoluteness he exhibited would have to be correlative to those parts and thus weakened by relativity, contingency, and dependence. What's more, without an absolutely simple God who is identical with all that is in him, one can offer no account of God or for anything else. If God is not the ontological sufficient reason for himself and all other things then he is not God (213).

On the basis of Dolezal's study, he believes then that "dispensing with the DDS is not advisable" (216). I would heartily agree.

A major strength of Dolezal's work is his style of writing. As you might be able to tell from the extended quote above, he uses short sentences and writes clear, crisp prose. In reading through the book, I found his discussions on DDS much easier to follow than, for instance, Scott Oliphint's God With Us. Given the dense philosophical nature of doctrines like divine simplicity (and the other connected attributes), it is a corner of the theological world that is usually accessible to only a few. While God without Parts is not going to be flying off the shelves at the local Lifeway Christian Stores, it is a very readable book given its subject matter.

Additionally, the book is a very strong contribution to the discussion of DDS. As Dolezal argues, and other theologians pre- and post- Aquinas have as well, this is an important doctrine and there is much at stake in choosing to abandon it. Dolezal mounts an impressive defense in a relatively short space (slightly over 200pgs) and I think his work merits interaction from any future thinkers who might question the efficacy of holding to DDS.

From my perspective at least, there is little to criticize in Dolezal's work. Part of this is that I already agreed with his position before reading the book, but part of it is that I thought it was a well written book. The chapters were not too overwhelmingly long, and Dolezal did a fine job of summarizing in the appropriate places (beginnings and ends of chapters). My one complaint was the abundance of untranslated Latin, but it is hard to imagine the train of thought being able to move as smoothly without the Latin shorthand. It may make the book heavier lifting for some readers who would otherwise be interested, but repetitive lifting builds mental muscles, and the next thing you know you'll be digging up diamonds.

WOW! I didn't expect this book to be so interesting! It's sucked me in with the studies and statistical data. I am often disappointed when it comes to this subject because most books are based mostly on opinions but this book includes data. I can now have a conversation about this topic and cite studies and data, and I can then research those studies further.

Top of the Game

Another satisfying MHTTS installment. Ben and Nikolas are two of the best written men I've read, and I've loved each book in this series. As far as reading enjoyment and writing quality go, they've far surpassed anything written in the Cut and Run series, which is probably the closest comparison in the m/m fiction genre.

This series consistently hits on all cylinders--witty believable dialogue, emotional intensity, crazy amounts of action, suspense/intrigue, and the absolutely most brilliant settings all over the globe. I always feel like I've just returned from some frenetic adventure-filled vacation as I come down from these books. And Ben and NIk's volatile passion (obsession!) for each other is just the icing on the cake. Truly. Their in your face masculinity and sex appeal is seriously beyond anything else that's out there. It's just so very good!

John Wiltshire is among only a handful of writers that represent the gold standard for me. I've bought all of his available novels over the past several months and I have never been disappointed. I've even re-read them a time or two, and they are all just as enthralling the second time around. Definitely an author I'd buy without needing to read the blurb (and for me, that's really saying something). He's just that good. Five big stars!

I've missed these guys

I've missed these guys. This series is one that keeps me entertained and is never boring.
I love the relationship between Nik and Ben, the little mind games they play with each other, that hurt no one, like Nik using what he believes is Ben's memory loss for his own advantage to keep smoking while Ben lets him waiting for the perfect opportunity to cut him off.
Ben is a great character that has grown over this series chipping away and gaining some control over his life. At the start Nikolas had all the power in the relationship but now they are more balanced. I like the way he stops and thinks, not acting out and ruining what they have to regret it later. He still makes some decisions in the heat of the moment but also admits, at least to himself that he may have made a mistake. The hurt and confusion about his relationship he felt from Nik's secret was well written, but Nik's total non understanding of the problem was also so in character. They love each other flaws and all. Ben is full of surprises. When you are thinking that he is not clueing into what is going on he surprises you with his knowledge of Nik and Nik's reactions.
Nikolas is one of the most complex characters I have ever read, every time you think you have a peg on him, he turns differently than expected. There were times during this book I was nodding along with his thoughts thinking well done, but other times I wanted to slap him in disappointment. His character has probably had the most growth over the series. In this book he showed a bit a softening, showing a conscience and admitting to mistakes, but when the chips were down and when he felt Ben was in danger the tough and brutal Alexi came out to play. He is such a planner, thinking so far ahead of the game, doing anything, even if it hurts himself to keep Ben safe, this is why he is one of my favourite characters.
I can't wait to see where the series heads to next

This one more a four

But I am 5 starring this series. Had not heard of John Wiltshire before, nor do I think I have seen these come up on the 'recommended list' or 'see more' on Amazon. They always seem to have the same books and authors.. Anyway, this came up, and because it was someone different than the usual names, and book 5 in a series, they are not werewolves, not a paranormal, I read the blurb, and went, meh. But good reviews, so went back through the books, and each blurb, and review getting better.

Bit the bullet for the first book. Was Blown away, l love the visceral feel of it, and each subsequent novel. Nikolas and Ben, the stories almost come in halves - what is happening in the real world, and their world, what is happening between them as each novel progresses. And the writing is good and solid. A few typos have slipped through, and a comma more here and there, BUT the idea has been played out very well in each story. I have one or two niggles in it, plot wise, but I am just going to have to reread to find out WHY.

Thank you John for your storytelling, with such realism. You have taken the two Alpha male concept, brought into a realistic scenario (apart from N's money), but, it didn't hurt the story)given them both an individual voice and fantastic sex, and love, but not in the concept of a gay novel. Kudos. Highly recommend, and now wait for the next instalment.
