You will be adequately prepared

I bought this review book knowing it was one of maybe 2-3 out there on the market. Having passed the CST in English (with a 250/300), I feel I can definitely endorse this product with confidence. It provides two exams to prepare on--I'd recommend you take one as a diagnostic (as is recommended in the review book), study all sections but specifically those that were your weakest, and then take it one more time.
If you still feel like you're not scoring very well, you can always take the practice exam offered on the NYSTCE website. However, remember that they only provide a few questions, not a full exam.
I will mention one thing: this book covers a lot of poetry and poetic/literary devices that WILL come up on the exam. Take note of these concepts, write them down on index cards and study them to the best of your ability. One way or another, these are concepts that will be incorporated into the exam.
It's hard prepare for the written portion, but just read through the written samples provided and, more importantly, the REASONING behind a high-scoring example--make sure to write in a way that will appeal to the admissions board, not your college professor. To be more specific, you are definitely trying to describe historical/literary theory present in the text, but they are much more interested in the way you extrapolate meaning from the text.

Somewhat helpful.

I studied for several weeks using this book. Be aware that you need to pull out all of your notes, texts, etc from your English degree. The book in no way covers all the content that you will encounter on the test. The CD is simply the same two tests that are in the book that are timed as you take them. The CD grades your test, but I could not get the item analysis because of some software error. (You can email your problem and they will assist you but I never did that.) I would look around for another tool to study with before you settle on this book.

The text is a bit long and tedious, but I read it and took one of the practice tests, and that was enough to secure a high score on the ELA CST. In retrospect, reading the book wasn't necessary to pass, but it was a good insurance policy, since I was unsure how I'd do.
