May Shatter Some Illusions

Once I started reading I could not stop although if your memories of David are of a sweet faced butter wouldn't melt in your mouth type, this book may shatter some of those illusions. (My friend who read it at the same time was stunned!) However, I admire David's complete honesty in saying the truth of what it really was like to be "an idol" in the seventies and his relationship with Susan Dey (well we did always wonder). I wish he had expanded more on life after he retired from the world of pop in the 70s but the title of the book does suggest his time on "the Partridge Family Bus". It was quite an insight into how lonely life at the top can really be (and not necessarily financially secure). There were quite a few similarities in his story to that of Donny Osmond - fame, adulation and then zip! (Oh how fickle people are)If you were a big David Cassidy fan in the 70s you may be amazed at what he was really like but in reading this book I can only admire his courage for being so honest and it is an interesting (to say the least) book to read.

For real fans only

If you are a fan of David Cassidy and really want to get inside the head and heart of the man, this is the book for you. If you want cute stories about being in the Partridge Family, forget it.
Why? Because Cassidy does a wonderful job of really taking you in his world as seen through his eyes. The tone of voice of this book changes with each era of his life that he is depicting. He discusses his sad, lost childhood of misbehavior and way too early sexual experinces sounding like kid still trying to justify neglect as a good thing. Then you really feel his enormous stress and overwork as a teen idol. When he talks about his "love" live, he takes the bragging tone of an adolescent schoolboy. After the show ends, he discusses his life using words that make you really feel his dragging depression and finally ends with the calm tone of someone who has come to a level of peace with his life. I like his writing style but it isn't for the weak of stomach. More of a rollercoaster ride.
Ironically, he brags about his sex life in such a way that you just end up feeling really, really sorry for him. I think he truly sees having bonked so many women as his big achievement during these years. But he sounds so immature, you realize he's almost got a bell jar effect going on in his sex life, possibly from losing his virginity so young.
The only other low point is that there are no pictures included of any of the other main people in his life except for one of him and Susan Dey together. None of his friends, none of his family -- not even one of his mentor and agent. Is he really that all alone or does he feel his looks are still all he has to sell? Overall though, a good summer read.

C'Mon, Get Happy

This is an excellent book. I learned a lot from this book, I and was glad David Cassidy is open and honest. I was a fan of David's when I was a kid, and I find myself renewing my admiration.
